Passionfruit

Passionfruit are an exotic fruit with a sweet taste and a delicious, slightly tart flavour.  As well as being delicious, they are rich in fibre, antioxidants and vitamins C and A. The juice, leaves and flowers of the vine all contain a compound called Harman. This is known to have a slight sedative effect, helping promote a good night’s sleep as well as reducing anxiety.

Most passionfruit is best eaten after the skin has wrinkled. It may not look its best, but that is when passionfruit is at its sweetest! Cut in half and scoop out the pulp with a spoon to enjoy a delicious tropical treat.

Storage

If left out at room temperature to ripen, passionfruit will wrinkle and sweeten up within a few days (in summer - in winter it might take a week or two). Passionfruit store well for a few weeks in the fridge, just get them out a few days before you want to eat them.

The fruit can be frozen whole or you can mix two parts pulp with one part sugar (the sugar prevents the pulp from breaking down) and freeze in small containers (ice-trays are ideal).
